Why Mid-Market Exchange Rates Matter

Understanding the difference between the rates you see online and the rates you actually get.

Every exchange rate you see on this website is a mid-market rate ?the midpoint between the global bid (buy) and ask (sell) prices at the time the European Central Bank publishes its daily reference data. This is the rate used by banks and financial institutions to trade among themselves, and it represents the true underlying value of one currency relative to another at that moment.

When you exchange money at a bank, ATM, airport kiosk, or online transfer service, the rate you receive is almost never the mid-market rate. These institutions add a markup ?called a "spread" ?to cover their costs and make a profit. The spread can range from 0.5% on large interbank transfers to 5% or more on small cash exchanges at airports. Some services hide the spread entirely by offering a "0% commission" rate that is actually several percent away from the mid-market rate.

This is why having access to the true mid-market rate is valuable: it gives you a benchmark to evaluate any offer. If a service quotes you 1.0800 for EUR/USD and the mid-market rate is 1.0850, you know the spread is approximately 0.5%. Armed with that information, you can decide whether the convenience justifies the cost, or whether to shop around for a better deal.
